The two tourist areas of Assateague Island National Seashore are located at the northern and southern tips of the island and are separated by a 1.5-hour drive. If you have kids, or are a curious adult, be sure to check out the tank. Half of the island is in Maryland and the other half is in Virginia. Given its namesake, Assateague Island National Seashore encompasses roughly half of the eastern shores scenic Assateague Island. The tank features horseshoe crabs and Whelk shells with the critters still in them. Unlike the Assateague Island Visitor Center in Maryland, Toms Cove Visitor Center does not have much of an exhibit area, but it does have what is called a “Touch Tank.” This is an aquarium of marine life that you can actually pick up. Assateague even has horse camps for people who bring their equine friends along, and the Visitor. RANGER-LED ACTIVITIESĭuring the summer season the park offers Ranger-guided tours and other activities, including crabbing and clamming lessons, kayak tours, surf fishing, and educational talks. Assateague - Bayside Drive/Kayak Boat Ramp is a boat launch on the Atlantic Ocean in Assateague Island National Seashore, Atlantic Coastal Plain, MD. OSV permits allow you to drive on the beach. March/April: Assateague Island sees a dramatic shift in weather during the spring, with average temperatures in early March in the low 50s that reach nearly 70☏ by the end of April. Camping is not allowed in the Virginia section of the park, but you can set out on a 13-mile hike to the closest backcountry campsite in Maryland.
